Written Response:
In the story The Giver by Lois Lowry, the theme in this realistic fiction novel is to learn from mistakes and without the constant teachings and memories of those mistakes we cannot act. Throughout the book you can see that the community was all the same they didn't accept change they wanted everyone and everything to be the same and a community cannot work like that. A community becomes stronger by learning from mistakes and how can there ever be mistakes if everyone is forced to do the same things. I say this because since Jonas was never prepared to follow such an important role in the community and the community didn't learn from their first mistake then the second outcome would be no different. In the story the author portrayed the theme in every character in Jonas it made him know that the community would go in to chaos if he left and so did the giver. Since the community was never prepared for something like that to happen they didn't know what to do.

The Boy Who Cried “Zombie”
There once was a little boy who at the time was living through the zombie apocalypse in San Diego, California. He was always alone for no one to play with and was sitting at the top of his dads truck bored out of his mind. To entertain himself he screamed “Help, help a zombie, I see a zombie.”
All of the people scurried  out of their cars and headed towards the boy but, when they arrived they grew big with fury for they found the boy laughing hysterically at them. They told the boy “Why would you trick us like that, we thought that you have gone into pandemonium.” Then they returned to their vehicle in a furious matter.
A couple of hours later the boy hid and decided to cry for help again “Help, help, the zombies are coming closer.”
The people dashed out of their cars and scattered all over the perimeter to try to find the boy but, they couldn’t find him anywhere. In a very cautious matter the boy came up from under one of the cars and laughed in a uncontrollable matter at them. The people where even more furious at the little boy and started to scream at him “Why are you doing this do you not know how serious that is!” The boy in a very rebellious matter ignored them.
A while later they decided to trick the little boy, they all dressed as zombies and decided to circle the little kid to teach him a lesson. Later on that day they took action. The little boy leaped onto his feet and yelled out in fear, “Help, help, zombies!” But no one came out. The boy grew with sadness as he watched the “zombies” get closer. When they saw that the little boy was crying they explained to the boy and said “Lying will not get you anywhere in life.”

Response to The Pearl

The Pearl
 by: John Steinbeck
In The Pearl by John Steinbeck the lesson of the parable is that in good times and bad times you should never change your attitude towards family. In the parable Kino and Juana where living a happy but poor life. Coyotito is their first born baby which gets stung by a scorpion and gets very sick. They take him to the doctor in which the doctor rejects them since they are unable to pay and is from a different colored race. In the desperate look for pearls near the Gulf of Mexico Kino finds a beautiful peal which is about the same size of a seagulls eye.
They return with the doctor and the doctor decides to help them with the money knowing that Kino found a pearl. After the baby is healed the doctor asked how he was going to pay knowing that Kino had a pearl. Kino responded "I found a pearl". They come to a agreement and decide to pay the doctor after the pearl is sold. Juana is convinced that the pearl is evil and is telling Kino but he is just ignorant. Many townspeople become greedy and desire the pearl for themselves and will do anything for it. Kino becomes extremely greedy and evil and during an encounter with a man who attacks him and kills him. Juana as the neck of the family decides one night to throw it but, gets caught by Kino and is beaten. After the murder they make plans to fleed the town but, later discover that their canoe has a big hole in it. The next day they decided to go on foot to the North and find out that they are being followed. The head up to the mountains and hide in a small cave. The trackers hear what sounds like a small wolf cry and shoot at the direction. Coyotito gets wounded by a bullet in the head and dies. They decide to throw the pearl back and go back to the town. In the parable there is a lot of human nature that is potrayed like selfishness for Kino, the townspeople, and the priest. Thomas's family potray the human nature of hospitality and help Kino and Juana hide and Juana is loyal for Kino and forgives him for all that he caused. Since Kino changed he didn't stay who he was he became extremely mad, obsessed, and uncaring for his family.

My Constructed Response

Constructed Response on “The Day I Got Lost” and “The Dark Brown Dog”
By: Martin C
Period 3
09/30/13
In the story “The Day I Got Lost” by Isaac Bashevis Singer, the authors tone is humorous because as you read the story you can imagine in your head how this guy must look and the way that he is acting it is as if you were reading a story by The Three Stooges. I say this because the author quotes “It is easy to recognize me. See a man in the street wearing a too long coat, too large shoes, and a crumpled hat with wide brim, spectacles with one lens missing, and carrying an umbrella though the sun is shining.” In this story the author decided to make it from a first person point of view. I say this because every time that the main character Professor Schlemiel talked he would say me, I, I’ve, Mine etc…. There are also a lot of positive connotations because Mr.Shlemiel would describe himself in a negative way but using positive connotations as if they were trying not to insult him that much. As I was reading the story, the tone helped me a lot because you get a much clearer picture of the setting and what is going on.
In the story “The Dark Brown Dog” by Stephen Crane the authors tone was dark because as he explained the characters and their feeling he would describe them in a very negative way. I say this because the author says “But the Father was in a mood for having fun, and it occurred to him that it would be fine if he threw the dog out the window”. In the story the authors decided to use third person omniscient as the point of view because I think that there were a lot of cruel and mean moments so it was very important to describe how the characters felt as they happened. I say this because the author says “One day, however the father of the family got quite exceptionally drunk, he came home and held carnival with the cooking utensils”. In the story there were many positive connotations. I say this because the author states many big words like peculiar, weary, retreating, contempt and he used many bold words to describe what was going on and how that affected the other characters. As I was reading the story the point of view really helped me understand how each and every character felt towards other characters options so you really get both sides to the story. The tone of the story also helped me identify what type of people the main characters really where and how their actions also reflected on their kids actions.

Response to poetry

For this assignment i choose to do my response on the poem "We Breathed You In"

1). In the poem "We Breathed You In" by Patti Tana the authors purpose is that she wants us to remember the attack and to let people know that when they died a little part of us died too.

2). The authors tone is sad depressed and worried because in the poem she describes what had happened and how she had felt while the attacks where going on and that is why she felt this way.

3).In the poem, "We Breathed You In" by Pattie Tana, she talks about the horrible day in which thousands of people died. In the poem the author says"My body, your body, my hand, your hand, take heart dear ones, we breath you in". The author says this because we remember the victims of 9/11 and they are still alive in our hearts.
