The Pearl
by: John Steinbeck
In The Pearl by John Steinbeck the lesson of the parable is that in good times and bad times you should never change your attitude towards family. In the parable Kino and Juana where living a happy but poor life. Coyotito is their first born baby which gets stung by a scorpion and gets very sick. They take him to the doctor in which the doctor rejects them since they are unable to pay and is from a different colored race. In the desperate look for pearls near the Gulf of Mexico Kino finds a beautiful peal which is about the same size of a seagulls eye.
They return with the doctor and the doctor decides to help them with the money knowing that Kino found a pearl. After the baby is healed the doctor asked how he was going to pay knowing that Kino had a pearl. Kino responded "I found a pearl". They come to a agreement and decide to pay the doctor after the pearl is sold. Juana is convinced that the pearl is evil and is telling Kino but he is just ignorant. Many townspeople become greedy and desire the pearl for themselves and will do anything for it. Kino becomes extremely greedy and evil and during an encounter with a man who attacks him and kills him. Juana as the neck of the family decides one night to throw it but, gets caught by Kino and is beaten. After the murder they make plans to fleed the town but, later discover that their canoe has a big hole in it. The next day they decided to go on foot to the North and find out that they are being followed. The head up to the mountains and hide in a small cave. The trackers hear what sounds like a small wolf cry and shoot at the direction. Coyotito gets wounded by a bullet in the head and dies. They decide to throw the pearl back and go back to the town. In the parable there is a lot of human nature that is potrayed like selfishness for Kino, the townspeople, and the priest. Thomas's family potray the human nature of hospitality and help Kino and Juana hide and Juana is loyal for Kino and forgives him for all that he caused. Since Kino changed he didn't stay who he was he became extremely mad, obsessed, and uncaring for his family.
